A guiding light

After completing his medical and dental training at Erlangen University obtaining a doctorate Dr. med. and Dr. med. dent., Hermann Sailer received his basic medical training in the specialist areas of internal medicine and gynaecology (Erlangen University), and General Surgery and Traumatology (Würzburg University). He then steadily climbed the academic ladder in the field of maxillofacial- and craniofacial surgery (under Professor Obwegeser) at the University of Zurich.

Hermann Sailer was Chairman and Director of the internationally renowned Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Zurich and Medical Director for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University Dental Institute. He has helped support numerous research projects in the field of maxillofacial surgery and has also developed new innovative techniques in aesthetic plastic surgery. Today, many of his former students are lecturers and professors of oral-facial surgery in the major universities of the world. Professor Sailer is one of the world's most knowledgeable experts in the field of maxillofacial surgery. As part of his work at the University Hospital Zurich, he has successfully carried out thousands of the some of the most complex operations over the past 30 years. His spectrum of work includes complex plastic-reconstructive surgery of the soft parts of the anatomy, and the correction of osseous structures of the face and skull. He has trained almost all of the surgeons specialising in cleft lip and palates in the CCI's project countries.

Thanks to Professor Sailer and his international network of oral-facial specialists, CCI cleft teams now have all the necessary skills to smooth the way to a happy future for thousands of cleft children.
